It’s that time of year – New Year’s Day. A chance for a new beginning and a time to set goals, right? But. when was the last time you actually met a goal?
It’s the time of year when you make New Year’s Resolutions. The time of year when you set goals to be healthly, exercise, eat well, get organized, spend less/save more, get a new job, learn a new hobby and live life to the fullest.
Everyone is talking and thinking about setting goals. You probably even have an inbox full of emails around this theme. And that’s not a bad thing. But…
How many times have you made a resolution or set a goal and not followed through with it?
Setting goals is just the very first step. And if you set your goals for the new year now and never look back, then you haven’t really accomplished anything, have you?
Here’s what I would recommend you do instead:

1. Set a goal. If you already have a list of goals, choose the first one that you want to accomplish. If you need help deciding which goal to work on first, check out this post to learn how to choose the project with the highest ROI (Return on Investment).
2. If you have a list of ten or twenty or a hundred goals, set that list aside. If you try to work on all of them at once, none of them will get done. Trust me on that one.
3. Make a list of all the things that you need to DO to meet each goal. This is key. In order to meet your goal, you must identify all the actions required to meet the goal. Think of this list of actions as your goal project plan.
4. Set a timeline for completing each goal. I would recommend working on one goal at a time.
5. Now, either schedule your tasks individually or just block out time to work on the tasks that you have identified on a regular basis. Either way, by doing this, you’re making a commitment to yourself to achieve your goal.
6. While you’re working on one goal, if you think of a new goal, add it to your list, but don’t stop working on the first goal until you’ve completed it.
7. Once you’ve finished the first goal, go back to your list and decide which goal to tackle next!
So, what goal will you complete first? Leave a comment below with the one goal that you will complete first. And then come back and celebrate with us when you’ve done it. You’ve got this!
